MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took down the University of Northern Iowa in a non-conference clash at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Eagles moved to 2-1 on the season after the 7-0 victory against the Panthers.

Diana Daviataia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) dropped the No. 2-doubles matchup, 6-2, but Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) and Mariya Toncheva (Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) made up for it with a 6-1 win at No. 3-doubles, earning the Eagles the doubles point.
The Green and White swept the singles matches against UNI. Supejova defeated Medlin, 6-2, 6-0, while Davitaia was successful in No. 2-singles, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stroobant, giving EMU a 3-1 lead. Mebuke won the No. 3-singles match versus Elvira Lopez in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (1), putting EMU up by three. Toncheva played at the 4-singles spot for Eastern and she took home a 6-4, 6-4 victory to move Eastern to a 5-1 lead and clinch the match. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) won the five-singles match easily, topping Krissy Lankelma, 6-1, 6-1 and finally, Ribero took down Sydney Wolfe at the No. 6 spot to give Eastern their first 7-0 victory of the season.
"Despite getting outplayed at # 2 doubles today, I think we did a good job of playing with confidence," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We had a decent first weekend and know that our peak is ahead of us this semester, so we will look to improve each and every week."
The Green and White are off until Friday, Jan. 24, when they host Butler for the Eagles' first home match on the 2013-14 schedule. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
