The Eagles have scored at least four goals during their four game winning streak
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – For the fourth straight game, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored at least four goals. That seems to be the magic number as the Eagles won their fourth consecutive match, downing the University of Toledo, 4-3, in a tight Mid-American Conference matchup Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29. With the victory, EMU jumps over the .500 mark overall at 5-4-1 while staying perfect in MAC play (2-0-0).
The Eagles once again shared the soccer ball as four different Eagles found the net, all in the first half. Martha Stevens (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Marian) provided the game's first goal while Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic), Bianca Rossi (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) and Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) also tallied goals in the first 45 minutes of the contest. Cutaia and Rossi each added a pair of assists, and Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London Secondary) also chipped in with an assist of her own.
Rio James, Brooke Maletic and the MAC's leading goal scorer, Rachel MacLeod, all recorded goals for the Rockets (3-7-0 (0-2-0 MAC)). MacLeod also was on the other end of a goal for an assist; teammates Alexis Tice and Kirsten Catloth provided the other two assists for Toledo.
Goalkeeper Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) (5-4-1) picked up her fourth straight victory in net for the Eagles, making three saves while allowing three goals. Toledo's Kelsey Borowitz (0-2-0) took the loss, giving up four goals on six EMU shots on goal. The Green and White held the advantage in shots, 15-11, but the Rockets had one more shot on goal than the Eagles, 7-6.
In what has been a common theme, the Eagles didn't waste much time chalking up a mark in the scoring column. Just seven minutes into the game, Bentley sent a ball into the box to Rossi. Instead of firing at the net, the junior forward found Stevens, who put the ball past the keeper for the third time this season.
Toledo knotted the match at one goal apiece five minutes later. MacLeod passed to James in the left side of the box. McCabe came out to challenge, but James was able to chip a shot right over the diving EMU goalie, tying the contest, 1-1, with 27:13 remaining in the opening half.
Back-to-back goals by Cutaia and Rossi gave the Eagles a two goal lead after 35 minutes of play. Rossi was on the giving end of the first goal, finding Cutaia, who put her team-leading sixth goal into the net in the 23rd minute. The two teammates reversed roles 12 minutes later as Cutaia relayed a pass to Rossi on the right side, and the Mississauga, Ontario native blasted a shot into the left corner of the net to put EMU up, 3-1.
The Rockets quickly answered less than two minutes later as a Maletic header found its way past McCabe, bringing the game back to within a goal at 3-2. However, as the first half was coming to a close, Cutaia sent a cross into the box where is would connect with Hirsch's head and into the net for the freshman's first career collegiate goal. After a high-scoring 45 minutes, EMU held a 4-2 advantage.
Aside from the scoring, the first half was rather even. EMU outshot Toledo, 8-7, but the Rockets held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. Both teams committed seven fouls while the Eagles were called offside three times.
The scoring died down in the second half with only one goal between the two teams. MacLeod cut the UT deficit to one with her header off a corner kick in the 61st minute, her eighth goal of the season. Toledo would continue to press, trying to tie the game up and force overtime; however, the EMU defense held strong and prevented the comeback, taking the match by the final tally, 4-3.
The Green and White will now take its four game winning streak and perfect conference mark on the road, facing two conference foes. EMU will compete under the lights at Bowling Green State University, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. before battling in-state rival Central Michigan University, Oct. 6, for a 1 p.m. matchup.
