EMU student-athletes create unity and tradition by supporting each other

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The new mantra of the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics — Eagles Unite — is more than just a catchy slogan, but a campaign of support that pervades through all of EMU 21 varsity sports. The Eagles Unite Games are a new tradition of athletes attending games not to play, but to be fans and cheer on their fellow student-athletes.

The athletic department requested each head coach to select a game on their schedule to designate as their Eagles Unite game. Based on the coach's feedback, a year-long schedule for the Eagles Unite campaign was developed. Every student-athlete is encouraged to attend these specific games affiliated with the Eagles Unite campaign as an opportunity to show their school pride while building camaraderie amongst other student-athletes. Every student-athlete was given an Eagles Unite t-shirt at their fall kick-off meeting to wear proudly at the games.

The women's soccer game against Northern Illinois University, Sept. 27, will be the first Eagles Unite game of the season. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Scicluna Field.

Among the busy schedules of our student-athletes, these events encourage inter-team fandom, giving them a crowd of like-minded supporters whom they can proudly show off their skills to. It also creates a platform for student-athletes to get to know each other better.

Additionally, the games are intended to build a support system between the athletes and the fans of EMU Athletics. The campaign extends beyond student athletes; it strongly encourages the athletic department staff, fans, alumni and students to show their support and attend these events as well.

The Oct. 19 game football game against Ohio University will feature all EMU student-athletes that are not in competition that weekend. The athletes will wear their special Eagles Unite t-shirt and form a pregame tunnel from which the team will emerge onto the field. At halftime, they will return for a special on-field introduction as well as a celebratory photograph.
