Former EMU Basketball Coach Allan Freund Passes Away

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Allan Freund, who served as a member of the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball coaching staff from 1967-76, passed away at age 79. Freund began as an assistant coach in 1967 before being named as the head coach in 1972.
Freund was a well-known name throughout the State of Michigan when it came to basketball. He enjoyed success at the high school level at Hale, Rockford and Southgate Schafer High Schools.
Freund joined the EMU coaching staff in 1967 as an assistant under Head Coach Jim Dutcher. After spending five years as an assistant to Dutcher, Freund was promoted to head coach prior to the 1972 season, when Dutcher left EMU for the University of Michigan.
Freund's tenure as the head coach of Eastern lasted until the 1976 campaign. Overall, Freund posted a 35-69 record for the Green and White over four years as the head man. During his time as head coach, Eastern transitioned from being an NCAA-Independant to their first season in the Mid-American Conference, 1973-74.
Freund retired from Eastern as an Assistant Professor for Physical Education in 1997 and was inducted into the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's Hall of Fame in 2007.
A funeral service for Coach Freund will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m at Dorfman Chapel (30440 12 Mile Rd.) in Farmington Hills, Mich. The Freunds will receive family and friends of Coach Freund at their home (3945 Adell Ct.) Commerce Township, Mich. after the funeral service, as well as, Thursday, Sept. 19, and Friday, Sept. 20, afternoon.
