YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University official athletics website, EMUEagles.com, topped 2,700,000 page views for the seventh consecutive time during the recently completed July 2012 to June 2013 athletic year. EMUEagles.com has broken its annual traffic records in each of the last four years as the Eagles' online brand continues to expand its audience.
EMUEagles.com also made a four percent jump in unique visitors, topping the 380,000 mark for the first time.
In 2005, EMU Athletics began an online technology partnership with SIDEARM Sports (formerly Internet Consulting Services), one of the largest athletic website providers in the world that currently works with more than 680 collegiate sports properties. This partnership included the design, hosting and operations of EMUEagles.com and was expanded in 2010 to incorporate video streaming, social media and mobile technology. The result has been tremendous growth in the Eagles' online brand over the last few years.
To understand this growth, a quick overview of the terminology is needed. Traditionally, the term 'hit' was used to measure web traffic. A 'hit' is a file sent to a browser by a web server. One web page can include many files in the form of pictures, ads, etc. As a result, using 'hits' to measure traffic can be misleading and overestimate the exposure of a website.
'Pageviews' have become the more common metric for determining the reach of a website. A pageview is logged each time a visitor views a specific page on a website. One user can rack up many pageviews on a site during any one session.
EMUEagles.com's monthly average of unique visitors increased by more than 1,200 compared to last year. The site also set a season-best with 55,734 unique visitors in September of 2011.
The largest reason for the increase was that video/audio views were up more than 200 percent from the previous year. The school's broadband channel, Eagle All-Access, streamed a record 74 events live and created additional 139 on-demand videos. More than 500 subscriptions were placed for the collaborative project between the EMU Athletic Media Relations Office and SIDEARM Sports.
In its four seasons, Eagle All-Access has streamed 259 live events for a total of more than 800 hours of original programming.
