Singles Play Leads Miami to 5-2 Tennis Win

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- It was a rough day on the courts for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team, as the squad dropped a 5-2 decision to the Miami University RedHawks Friday, April 5, in a Mid-American Conference match at Hepburn Courts. The Eagles won the doubles point, but Miami used strong singles play to overcome the early deficit.

"We played some better doubles today," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "However overall we didn't play a complete match from start to finish.  Miami's one of the best in the MAC and you cannot let up for a minute against a team of that caliber."

Eastern Michigan (6-12, 1-3 MAC) took an early advantage in doubles, as Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke teamed up to win the No. 1 match, 8-2. Miami (7-12, 3-1 MAC) evened play when Alix Thurman and Nimisha Mohan posted an 8-4 win at No. 2. The No. 3 match started out in favor of Miami, but Zsofia Biro and Daphne Friedrichs took six straight games for an 8-3 win.

Singles play was a different story. Christine Guerrazzi dominated Friedrichs at No. 4, surrendering only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win. Thurman followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mebukeat No. 2 to give Miami the match lead, 2-1, but EMU evened the score as Supejova moved up to the No. 1 postion with a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Christiana Raymond notched a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ankita Bhatia at No. 3 to give the RedHawks the lead for good. Ramona Costea rallied from a 2-1 deficit against Mariya Toncheva in the second set for a 6-3, 6-4 victory that sealed the RedHawks' win.

Eastern Michigan remains on the road Saturday, April 6, with a 1 p.m. match at Ball State University
