Supejova named both the MAC Player of the Year and the Freshman of the Year

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University freshman Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic) has been named the Mid-American Conference women's tennis Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year as announced by the league office, April 25.

A native of Prague, Czech Republic, Supejova finished the season at No. 1 singles with a 26-9 overall record, including 6-2 in the MAC, and No. 1 doubles with a 21-13 overall record, 7-1 in conference play. The 26 victories were the most by an EMU student-athlete since Vanessa Frankowski went 29-6 during the 2007 campaign en route to winning MAC Player of the Year accolades.

Supejova joins fellow Eagle Rebecca Hawkins as the only two players in league history to collect both awards in the same season. Hawkins accomplished the rare feat during the 2000 season. In total, the Eagles have collected a MAC-leading seven Player of the Year honors since the league began handing out the award in 1998.

"As a freshman, Klara really showed a lot of composure to play at the highest level in the Mid-American Conference," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "She is very deserving of both awards and we are excited for three more years from her."

Bowling Green Head Coach Penny Dean was named MAC Coach of the Year as the Falcons secured the No. 2 seed with a 5-3 conference record and an overall record of 16-4.

Toledo freshman Emily Mazzola earned the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award.  Mazzola, a native of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, played the season at No. 4 and No. 5 singles with a 5-3 conference record and 10-8 overall record, and played No. 1 doubles with a 2-6 conference record and 10-11 overall mark. The award is presented to the player who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition.

Regular season champion Miami University won the program's fifth consecutive MAC regular season title with a 7-1 conference record.  Miami was represented as Nimisha Mohan was named first team All-MAC, while Alix Thurman was named a second team All-MAC selection.

Bowling Green, the conference No. 2 seed with a 5-3 conference mark, was represented as junior Nikki Chiricosta was selected as a second team All-MAC selection.

Akron, the MAC's No. 3 seed with a 5-3 record and 17-9 overall record, placed two first team selections and one second team selection.  For the Zips, Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart were both named first team All-MAC selections, while Olga Shkundina was named second team All-MAC.

Ball State sophomore Courtney Wild was named first team All-MAC for the second consecutive season. Also from the Cardinals, freshman Courtney Earnest was named a second team All-MAC selection.

Northern Illinois sophomore Nelle Youel was named first team All-MAC.
