YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team closed out the 2012-13 season with a 4-3 upset victory over the University of Akron, the two-time defending Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions, Saturday afternoon, April 20, at the Chippewa Club. The victory was bittersweet for EMU though, as the Eagles will be left on the outside looking in at the upcoming MAC Tournament in Muncie, Ind., April 26-28.

The MAC Championships format has changed for the 2012-13 campaign, and only six of the nine teams will qualify for league postseason play. Miami clinched the regular season title and the No. 1 seed with a 7-1 league record. Bowling Green, Akron and Ball State each finished with 5-3 marks, while Western Michigan, Buffalo and EMU notched 4-4 records. EMU lost the tiebreakers to both WMU and UB after dropping the regular season meetings, each by a 4-3 tally.

"What an effort by our team today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "After a four and a half hour battle yesterday, they came back like champions today to beat a great Akron team.  It's a real bittersweet ending today though, as we didn't get the help we needed to advance to the tournament.  We defeated the second, third, and fourth place teams this year, but since we lost to the teams we are tied with, we won't advance.  This was an extremely close-battled conference season for us, and two of our losses were decided in a third set tiebreaker.  We were a third set tiebreaker away from finishing second this year.  It doesn't get any closer than that in tennis.  Certainly disappointing to see the looks on their faces that we didn't get in the tournament after such a great win today, but the potential for next year with this team is so high, I can't wait to get started again."

Eastern Michigan finished the year at 9-13 overall record and 4-4 league action, while Akron goes to 17-9 and 5-3 in the MAC.

Akron's No. 1 doubles team of Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart captured an 8-4 win over EMU's Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova. The EMU No. 2 team of Ankita Bhatia and Mariya Toncheva bested Akron's Ksenia Berestetska and Olga Shkundina, 8-4, and the No. 3 team of Daphne Friedrichs and Zsofia Biro posted an 8-1 win over the UA team of Madison Cohen and Angelika Jogasuria to give the Eagles the early 1-0 edge.

In single's action, it was Supejova's 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles against Jogasuria that clinched match point for the Green and White. The victory was the 26th of the season for the native of Prague, Czech Republic, the most by an Eagle since Vanessa Frankowski went 29-6 during the 2007 campaign.

Eastern would also collected wins at No. 5 by Biro and at No. 6 by Toncheva.
