YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell short in its final regular season game, 78-67, to the visiting University of Toledo at the Convocation Center, Saturday, March 9. The Eagles (14-17; 7-9 MAC) will host the opening round of the 2013 FirstEnergy MAC Tournament Monday, March 11, as the No. 7 seed against the No. 11 seed, which has yet to be determined.
Saturday's contest was EMU's Senior Day Celebration. Before the game, seniors Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale (SEMO)), Matt Balkema (Roseville, Mich.-Cousino), and Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) were honored for their dedication and leadership.
The Eagles were outpaced in the second half, only scoring 32 points compared to 47 second half points by the Rockets. The Eagles' second half shooting woes erased their first half lead.
EMU shot 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) whereas UT shot 27-of-53 (50.9 percent). Thompson led all scorers with a season-high 25 points including the Eagles' final four buckets. Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy (Arkansas)) chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds. J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Snider) tallied 13 for the Green and White. Toledo's Dominique Buckley led the visitors in scoring with 21 points. Four Rockets scored in double digits.
Seniors led the opening charge for the Eagles. Harris was first on the scoreboard, scoring from the top of the lane. Thompson then finished at the hoop during the Eagles' second possession. Rian Pearson scored the Rockets' first points putting in a fast-break layup.
Five minutes into the first half, the Green and White went on a 12-0 run, five of those point contributed by Bryant. Coach Rob Murphy's zone was able to hold the Rockets scoreless for a three and-a-half minute stretch until Pearson ended the drought at the 12:09 mark. The Eagles built an 18-8 lead.
Midway through the first, the Eagles committed three consecutive turnovers and opened the door for Toledo to chip away at their lead. The Rockets were on a 6-0 before Thompson hit a step back three to regain some of EMU's momentum.
EMU led 26-20 after Thompson made a jumper from the wing at the five-minute mark. Thompson and Bryant each scored 10 of EMU's first 26 points.
Another 6-0 run by Toledo, capped off by a triple from Dominique Buckley, tied the game for the first time since the opening jump, with four minutes reaming in the first half.
With under three to play in the opening half, Sims got involved in a big way, scoring his first points of the contest and then on the next Rocket possession, stealing the ball to set up his own transition three pointer.
The Eagles led, 35-31, at the break. Both teams shot well in the first half. EMU hit on 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from the field and UT made 12-of-25 (48.0 percent). The Green and White was perfect form the strip in the opening half, making all seven of its attempts. Eastern got a boost from the bench as the home reserves outscored UT's bench, 16-3, in the first 20 minutes.
Thompson picked up the second half just how he left off in the first, scoring a smooth jumper on his initial touch. A three from Buckley marked the first score for the Rockets in the second stanza.
At the 17:17 mark, Buckley converted another three-point attempt to give UT its first lead of the game, 40-39. After Harris tied things up with a free-throw, Buckley put the Rockets back in front with his third triple of the half. UT went on 12-1 run over a three minute stretch to give the visitors their largest lead to that point, 52-41.
The Eagles went nearly 10 minutes between field goals. Thompson ended the drought scoring a three from way out to put the score at 58-44 with 9:55 remaining. Back-to-back treys from Sims cut the Rockets' lead to 12. However, Buckley continued to have a hot hand for the visitors, scoring back-to-back three pointers of his own.
With 2:32 remaining in the contest, the Eagles were down 14 points, 76-62, and began to foul on each of the Rockets' possessions to see if they could climb back into the game. Despite some late game heroics from Thompson, the home team was not able to overcome the deficit.
