YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In the first Mid-American Conference game of the season, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell in the final second against the Ball State University Cardinals, 60-58, Wednesday night, Jan. 9, at the Convocation Center.

Chris Bond converted two free throws with 0.6 seconds left to give the Cardinals a two point win. The junior forward was perfect from the field making all eight of his shots and leading Ball State with 18 points. Jauwan Scaife also added 18 points for BSU, including four three-pointers.

Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich. – Melvindale) led the Eagles in scoring, bringing in 16 points and sinking 8-of-9 shots from the charity stripe. J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind. – Snider) tied his season high with 12 points as the Eagles' bench outscored the Cardinals' bench, 28-2.

The two MAC rivals were impressive from the floor all night long. Ball State drained 24-of-41 shots (58.5 percent) while Eastern made 21-of-41 (51.2 percent). The Cardinals controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Eagles, 29-16.

EMU forced 19 turnovers while only giving up 11, but it was not enough as the Green and White dropped to 7-8 on the season and 0-1 in MAC play. With the victory, Ball State improved to 7-6 and 1-0 in the conference.

Eastern began the scoring with a quick steal and breakaway layup by Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich. – Oak Hill Academy). Ball State responded with a layup of its own from Majok Majok within the first minute of the game. A minute later, Bryant took another steal to the hoop for a one-handed slam to give the lead back to the Eagles. Once again Ball State answered, this time with an NBA-ranged 3-pointer and a fast-break layup, to give the Cardinals a 7-4 lead with 17:06 remaining in the opening half.

Ball State continued its hot start hitting seven of its first eight shots, three of which came from beyond the arc, for a 17-11 lead.  The Eagles' defense tightened up forcing two turnovers, while the offense scored eight straight points to take back the lead, 19-17. After a nearly five-minute scoring drought for BSU, the Cardinals regained the lead after forcing two turnovers and scoring six points to make it a 23-19 game. Head Coach Rob Murphy took a timeout at the 6:47 mark in the first half.

After the Eagles cut the lead to one, the Cardinals nailed back-to-back threes to give them a 31-24 advantage. With 1:23 remaining in the first half, things got heated between the two MAC foes. Following a scramble on the floor that led to a personal foul on Matt Balkema (Roseville, Mich. – Cousino), the EMU senior exchanged words with Jesse Berry and both players were assessed technical fouls. With both players left on the bench for the remainder of the half, a bucket by Harris made it a 33-28 Cardinal lead at halftime.

Both teams shot well from the field in the first half. The Green and White made 12-of-22 shots for a 54.5 percent field goal percentage, while the Cardinals made 14-of-22 shots for a 63.6 shooting percentage.

Scaife led Ball State with 11 first-half points, going 3-of-5 from the three-point line. Sims paced the Eagles with seven points off the bench as EMU outscored Ball State, 9-0, in bench points. The biggest difference in the first half came from beyond the arc where BSU sank 5-of-9 threes, while Eastern struggled, making only 1-of-6 attempts.

Coming out for the second half, the Cardinals increased their lead to eight, 41-33, following a breakaway dunk by Chris Bond. After a block on the defensive end by Harris, he converted a bucket down low, courtesy of a nice look from Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio – St. Vincent-St. Mary) to cut the lead to four.

With the Eagles down one and looking to take their first lead since early in the first half, Ball State was determined to hang on to the lead, going on a seven-point run to make it 52-44 with 7:42 remaining. Thompson interrupted the run with a long three, but the Eagles failed to convert free throws in the bonus, missing two front-ends of one-and-one attempts to keep the game in favor of the Cardinals.

Another Thompson three-pointer kept EMU within striking distance, and a five-second violation gave the Eagles the ball back with only 3:28 showing on the clock. Following the final media timeout, Thompson gave the team three points after being fouled on another three point attempt, making the game 56-54 with the Cardinals on top.

After both teams exchanged turnovers, Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio – Euclid) grabbed a missed BSU three and Coach Murphy asked for a timeout to set up a play with just 1:42 to go in the game. The play was set up for Thompson as the senior guard launched a three off a screen, but couldn't connect. Although Ball State grabbed the rebound, the Eagles' defense forced a turnover to get the ball back with 54.9 seconds left. However, the Cardinals took the ball right back and Eastern was forced to foul by putting Ball State at the foul line.

Scaife missed the first free throw attempt, but an offensive rebound kept the ball with the Cardinals. With a second chance, Scaife converted both free throws to make it a four-point game. Sims drove quickly down the court for a layup, cutting the lead in half. Eastern was forced to foul again, causing Thompson to foul out of the contest with 14 seconds to go. A missed free throw and defensive rebound gave the Eagles life and Jalen Ross (Greensboro, N.C. – Greensboro Day School) drove down the lane, drawing a foul. Ross drained the pressure free throws to tie the game with 8.3 seconds left.

The Cardinals quickly advanced the ball up the court, and Bond drew a foul on Riley with just 0.6 left on the clock. Bond calmly made both free throws and the Cardinals knocked away the in-bound heave to hang on to a 60-58 win over the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 12, traveling to Bowling Green for its first MAC road game of the season. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. and can be seen on Sportstime Ohio and MAC-TV.
