Spartans record a 4-3 win against the Eagles in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Despite winning the doubles point, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team could not hold off a late charge by Michigan State University. The Spartans took four of the singles points to capture a 4-3 decision Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
"This is our third straight close loss," mentioned Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We need more competitive balance in singles to win these close matches. We did enough to win the doubles to get to a good start, we just couldn't hold off the Spartans in the end."
With the victory, Michigan State remains undefeated on the year at 3-0. On the flipside, Eastern Michigan falls to 1-4 overall with the loss.
In doubles, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic) knocked off Marina Bohrer and Catherine Parenteau, 8-5, on court one. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) handed Nicole Herzog and Michaela Silesova an 8-4 loss. At No. 3 the MSU duo of Emily Meyers and Julianne Gruber produced an 8-1 victory over Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary), 8-1.
On court one, Bohrer continued her singles winning streak gaining a win against the Eagles' Mebuke, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Supejova dropped the first set 6-2, before rebounding 6-2, 6-4 to defeat Parenteau. Olga Chernova topped Friedrichs 6-4 in the first set before Friedrichs tallied wins in sets two and three, 7-5, 10-5. Herzog downed Toncheva on court four as she recorded a Spartan victory, 6-2, 6-1. Katarina Lingl tallied a 7-6, 6-2 win in a match-up against Ankita Bhatia. Meyers defeated Biro, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Green and White round out the road trip at IPFW Saturday, Jan. 26. in Fort Wayne, Ind. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
