Eastern drops a 4-3 contest to former Mid-American Conference rival

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com) -- Marshall University proved too much for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team Friday morning, Jan. 18, at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Thundering Herd picked up what turned out to be the deciding point in doubles competition as Karlyn Timko and Dana Oppinger beat Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary), 8-5, and Ellie Ball and Kara Kucin defeated Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski), 8-6.
With the victory Marshall improved to 1-0 on the year while Eastern Michigan fell to 1-2.
"This was a tough loss," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Marshall has a great team, but we didn't do a great job of taking care of our side of the net when we had a 6-3 lead at No. 2 doubles, and in some first sets of singles. We just need to finish better in those situations. "
The two former Mid-American Conference foes split the six singles competition with Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School), Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic) and Biro each picking up victories for the Eagles.
The team continues its road trip Saturday, Jan. 19, with a 10 a.m. match at Eastern Kentucky University.
