YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team started off its 18th season with a 2-1 setback Friday afternoon, Aug. 17, against the University of Pittsburgh at Scicluna Field. Reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Angela Vultaggio scored her first goal of the season and redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell stopped 11 shots.

Eastern Michigan (0-1-0) got on the board early as Vultaggio netted her seventh-career goal in the sixth minute. Pittsburgh (1-0-0) pushed the pace after falling behind and scored goals in the 34th and 69th minutes from Riliegh McHugh and Morgan Sharick, respectively, to claim the victory.

The Eagles fall to 9-7-2 all-time in home openers and 9-5-4 in season lidlifters since the squad's inception in 1995.

Vultaggio started the scoring when she flicked a cross from Bianca Rossi from the top of the penalty area over the head of a leaping Nicole D'Agostino to put the home team ahead.

The Panthers looked to get even off a corner kick in the 14th minute, but O'Dell was up to the task and made a save off a header from point-blank range.

Emily Dzik made a bid to put the Eagles ahead by a pair in the 27th minute, but her header in front of the Pittsburgh goal was snatched out of the air by D'Agostino. Seven minutes later, the Panthers found the equalizer off the foot of McHugh, who put a shot far-side past a sprawling O'Dell.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to pressure the EMU defense. The Eagles fended off several attacks, but could not keep Sharick from netting the game-winning tally off a corner in the 69th minute.

O'Dell came up with a big stop in the 88th minute to keep EMU within striking distance, but a late rush fell short and Pittsburgh walked away with the victory.

EMU continues a three-game homestand Sunday, Aug. 19, with a 1 p.m. matchup against Oakland University.
