Women's Tennis Drops First MAC Match

Eagles fall, 6-1, to RedHawks to go 2-1 in league play
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team lost a 6-1 dual-match decision to the Miami University RedHawks here Saturday, March 31, indoors at the Chippewa Racket Club, giving the Eagles their first Mid-American Conference setback of the season.
The Eagles are now 2-1 in the MAC and 6-12 overall while Miami stays perfect in league play at 4-0 and 9-9 overall.
“I'm proud of our effort and the fight we showed today,” Ray said of his Eagles' squad. “Miami is currently at the top of the conference and we fought them close in most matches. They were more clutch at the end of most sets and that proved to be the difference.”
Miami won the doubles point, taking the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, while the EMU No. 1 team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke managed a 6-4, 7-6 (10) win over the Miami duo of Stephanie Danesis and Alix Thurman.
In singles action, the visitors won five of six matches with the lone EMU victory coming at No. 6 where Marcela Rivero managed a grinding, 6-7 (5), 6-2 , 10-8, win over Christine Guerrazzi.
The Eagles also had tight matches at No. 1 singles, where Mebuke was edged by Danesis, 6-4, 7-6 (10), and at No. 2 singles, where Westerink went three sets, only to fall to Riekie Honiball, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Eastern will now travel to DeKalb, Ill. for a Friday, April 6, MAC dual match against the Huskies of Northern Illinois University.
