Emig and Hendricks Complete First Day of NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) Briana Emig and Kelly Hendricks of the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of action at the 2012 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Ala. this afternoon, March 15.

Although neither athlete qualified for the evening's final sessions, both faired well in their respective events.

In the 500 freestyle, Emig placed 34th overall with a time of 4:45.35 in the event. Georgia's Shannon Freeland was the top seed in the 500 freestyle after swimming a pool-record time of 4:34.49, topping the 4:37.62 by Cal's Natalie Coughlin in 2002.

In the evening's final 500 session, Southern California's Haley Anderson earned the title after racing to a 4:34.48 finish.

Hendricks took 22nd in the one meter dive this afternoon, tallying a six-dive total of 281.20. Southern California's Victoria Ishimatsu took top honors in the prelims with a score of 331.55.

The duo will return to action tomorrow afternoon for the preliminary session set for 11 a.m. Scheduled events include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle and three meter dive. Finals for each event will begin at 7 p.m.
