E-Club Hall of Fame induction ceremony and Polish-American Heritage Day highlight Saturday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The campus of Eastern Michigan University will be abuzz with action Saturday, Feb. 11, as seven of the school's intercollegiate athletic teams will compete either at home or around the region. Additionally, the E-Club, a group of former EMU varsity athletic letterwinners, will enshrine seven new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

This year's class will mark the 36th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the EMU Student Center followed immediately by a buffet luncheon.  The Class of 2011 includes:  Howard Booth (men's gymnastics), Ingrid Boyce Benn (women's track), Traci Parsons McMullen (women's basketball, women's track), Linda Milholland (softball), Jamie Nieto (men's track), Norm Parker (football) and John Schmidt (football).

Beginning at 1 p.m., the EMU gymnastics team will host the Broncos of Western Michigan University, inside Bowen Field House. WMU will look to remain undefeated on the season, while EMU is competing to capture its first Mid-American Conference win.

Then at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center, Head Women's Basketball Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's team hosts Kent State University. The Eagles enter the game with a mark of 16-7 (8-2 MAC), tied with the University of Toledo atop the MAC West Division. Meanwhile, the Golden Flashes are 5-15 (4-6 MAC) after falling to Toledo, 66-55, in Toledo, Ohio, Feb. 4.

The women's game is the first part of a doubleheader with the Eastern Michigan men's basketball team, which tangles with Ohio University 30 minutes following the conclusion of the EMU-KSU contest. EMU, under first-year Head Coach Rob Murphy,  enters the game with a 10-14 overall record and a MAC West-leading 5-5 record. Ohio is currently 19-5 overall and 7-3 in MAC action.

Polish-American Heritage Day will also be celebrated throughout the hoops doubleheader with a Polish art show and historical exhibits. Polish dance troupes, folk music and Polish food items will also be featured. Magda Kaminski, a Polish pop-rocker, will be featured at halftime of both games to showcase her upcoming album.

With the Eastern Michigan men's and women's basketball teams sitting in first place in the MAC West Division standings, the Eagles are in an elite category nationally. Heading into Thursday, Feb. 9, EMU is just one of eight schools across the 32 Division I basketball conferences that have both first-place men's and women's teams.

The other schools include: Atlantic Coast: Duke; MAC West Division: Eastern Michigan, Missouri Valley: Wichita State, Mountain West: San Diego State; Southeastern: Kentucky, SWAC: Mississippi Valley State,  Sun Belt East: Middle Tennessee and Sun Belt West: Arkansas-Little Rock.

Away from Ypsilanti, the men's and women's track and field teams head to Grand Valley State University's  "Big Meet" while the wrestling team makes an appearance at the Edinboro Open. Meanwhile, the men's swimming and diving team sends some student-athletes to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Ohio State University Winter Invitational.
