Women's Swimming and Diving Takes Fifth at MAC Championships

Three land All-MAC accolades; Buck Smith named diving coach of the year

— After the final day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team took fifth with 392 points.

Toledo took home the title after tallying 635 points throughout the three-day event, while Ohio University placed second with 612 points. Miami placed third (524) and Buffalo took fourth (448), followed by EMU, Ball State (317), Akron (287) and Bowling Green (268).

Three members of the EMU squad took home All-MAC accolades. Briana Emig and Kelly Hendricks took home first time honrs, while Jessie Godlewski earned second team All-MAC.

Buck Smith was named the 2012 Diving Coach of the Year. It is the third consecutive season in which he has received the award.

The Eagles opened up the final day with a fourth place finish in the three meter dive from Danielle Hulvey. She accumulated 320.35 points in the event, while one meter champion Kelly Hendricks took eighth after tallying 300.85 points this evening.

In the 1,650 freestyle finals, Briana Emig raced to a 16:16.89 time for a third place finish. Wesley Blassneck finished in the top-ten for the Eagles, posting a time of 16:57.54 for eighth place in the event.

Amanda Kiefer secured an eighth place finish in the 200 backstroke for EMU, touching the wall in 1:59.73 in the final heat.

In the 100 breaststroke, Lauren Kalinosky was the only Eagle to compete in the finals, completing the distance in 2:19.18 for 15th place.

A pair of Eagles medaled in the 200 butterfly. Freshman Jessie Godlewski was runner-up in the event, sprinting to a 1:59.37 finish. Teammate Jacquelyn Swartz followed in third place, posting a time of 1:59.91 for the Green and White. Paige Copeland took 12th in the event in 2:02.96, while Meghan Richardson placed 14th in 2:03.04.

Sara Ghaffari Helena Tolic, Godlewski and Emig combined for an eighth place finish in the evening's final 400 freestyle relay event in 3:29.24.
