Churchwell, Jacobson, Rawls and Wolanin named team captains

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –  Eastern Michigan University women's track and field Head Coach Sue Parks announced that Morgan Churchwell (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central), Tatijana Jacobson (Woodville, Ohio-Woodmore), Asia Rawls (Waterford, Mich.-Waterford Mott) and Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season.

For seniors Churchwell, Jacobson and Rawls, this will be their second-straight season leading the women's track and field team. Wolanin, a junior, begins her first season as team captain.

“Our athletes voted on captains, and I could not be more pleased with their selections,”  commented Coach Parks. “Churchwell, Jacobson and Rawls all served as captains last year, and they were outstanding leaders. Wolanin will be a great addition as she is an extremely positive person with a wonderful personality. All four know what it means to work hard towards a common goal. They all share the vision of the coaching staff and will be great role models for our young athletes.”

Churchwell, a senior for the Green and White, is coming off an indoor season last year in which she posted two victories. The mid-distance runner was also a member of the Distance Medley Relay team that ran a school record 11:30.21 at the Meyo Invitational.

To jump start this season, Jacobson nearly broke the EMU high jump record of 1.85 meters with a career-best 1.83-meter leap to take first in the season-opening Eagle Holiday Meet, helping the Eagles cruise to a home meet victory. She won three events last year in her first season at EMU after transferring from Bowling Green, claiming the high jump at the Eagle/Rocket Holiday Meet, Al Owens Classic and Len Paddock Invitational.

Rawls, the third senior captain, enters her final season at Eastern following a spectacular 2011-12 campaign in which she competed in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 23rd in the 400-meter hurdles. Along with winning the 400-meter hurdles at the Spartan Invitational, Rawls also earned five runner-up finishes last year, including a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a season-best 58.39.

The only non-senior captain, Wolanin, earned All-MAC honors by taking fourth in the high jump en route to  winning the pentathlon at the MAC Indoor Championships a season ago.
