Air Force Academy Invitational slowed by weather in first of three days of action
COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team had to battle their oppoents and the weather here Friday, Oct. 5, in the first day of the three-day Air Force Academy Invitational.
Some of the action was held outdoors until damp and cold weather moved the action indoors.
“All together, we had a decent day,” Ray said of his team's effort. “We didn't lose a set in our singles matches which showed some great focus by the ladies. Our doubles wasn't up to par, which was disappointing, so we need to work on that more when we get home. We will look to get some strong wins tomorrow as we progress through the draws.”
The Eagles's doubles team of Daphne Friedrichs and Mariya Toncheva had a bye in the first round and then handed the Colorado State duo of Adriana Wojakowski and Mollie Cooper an 8-3 setback to advance in the winner's bracket to face the University of Illinois team of Julia Jamieson and Audrey O'Connor in a match Saturday.
The other EMU doubles team in action Friday was the duo of Diana Davitaia and Nino Mebuke. That EMU squad dropped two straight matches to drop into the loser's bracket Saturday.
