The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team's bid for a Mid-American Conference title ended Sunday afternoon, Oct. 28, as the No. 3-ranked Eagles were eliminated on penalty kicks by the No. 6 University of Toledo at Scicluna Field in the MAC Tournament quarterfinal. The Eagles (11-6-2; 8-3-0 MAC) fell on penalty kicks in the opening round for the second time in three seasons, while the Rockets (7-11-2; 5-5-1 MAC) advanced to the semifinal for a seventh consecutive season.

After the Rockets broke the scoring open 10 minutes in on a goal by Kristen Mattei, the Eagles found the equalizer on a Stephanie Clarke goal in the 36th minute. With a strong wind blowing in their direction, the Rockets posted the bulk of the scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to find the go-ahead tally.

In overtime, sophomore Angela Vultaggio's breakaway chip shot sailed inches over the crossbar as the game remained deadlocked, 1-1. Eastern Michigan opened the shootout with a goal by Clarke, but it would be their only conversion as UT scored on their second and fifth tries to clinch a spot in the semifinal.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell was sharp for the Eagles in her first game back after missing the previous three due to injury. O'Dell stopped eight-of-nine Toledo shots and made a pair of saves in the shootout. She earned a tie for her efforts and finished her first season at EMU with a record of 8-6-2.

Clarke's goal was her second of the season. The junior forward finished the 2012 campaign with 11 points. Junior Chelsie Oddan recorded her second assist on the season.

For the Rockets, Mattei notched her second goal of the season on an assist from Rachel MacLeod. Mattei also scored the deciding goal in the shootout. Goalkeeper Sam Tiongson was credited with the tie, playing all 90 minutes of regulation plus overtime. Tiongson was lifted for Kelsey Borowitz, who played in the shootout and made one save.

Toledo will face No. 2 Central Michigan University in the MAC Tournament semifinal Friday, Nov. 2.

Eastern Michigan was on its heels early as the Rockets posted the game's first scoring chance in the second minute when Rachel Kravits' shot flew just wide of the left goalpost. An inability to clear the zone combined with superb UT ball handling led to Mattei's goal in the 10th minute. MacLeod gathered a deflection off an EMU defender and slid a pass to Mattei, who deposited the ball into the lower left side of the cage.

Later in the half, sophomore Bianca Rossi and Vultaggio nearly had a 2-on-0 breakaway. As Rossi looked to make her move on goal, a UT defender made a sliding tackle to block her shot and keep the Eagles behind by a goal.

In the 36th minute, the Eagles finally broke through to tie the score as Oddan played a pass across the field to Clarke. Standing near the right edge of the box, Clarke let off a perfect header that surprised Tiongson and bounced into the left corner of the goal.

The first half concluded with the Eagles holding an 8-6 edge in total shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Sunny skies and pleasant conditions which prevailed in the first half gave way to thick clouds, gusty winds and colder temperatures to start the second frame. With a driving wind against them, the Eagles were forced to weather a UT offensive attack which launched 11 shots over the final 45 minutes.

O'Dell came up big in the 77th minute, when she punched a rising shot from Mattei over the crossbar to keep the tie in tact. Defender Emily Kowalzyk came to O'Dell's rescue with less than three minutes to play when MacLeod beat the EMU goalkeeper and was sure she had scored the go-ahead goal. Kowalzyk slid to knock the ball away just before it crossed the goal line.

Junior Cara Cutaia had the best scoring chance for the Eagles in the second half, when she received a pass in the middle of the box from sophomore Marisa Kozikowski and fired on goal. The shot was labeled for the lower-right corner of the goal, but a diving Tiongson got her hands on the ball just before it rolled past her.

In the first overtime, the Eagles' defense once again came under attack as the Rockets put a pair of shots on O'Dell. O'Dell was up to the task both times and kept EMU's hopes alive.

The second overtime finally saw the Green and White get its chance to play with the wind at its back. It nearly paid off as Kowalzyk sent a clearing kick downfield, which found a wide-open Vultaggio who had just the goalkeeper to beat. Tiongson came out of the net to meet Vultaggio as she sent a chip shot into the air. The ball descended too slowly in the blustery wind and it fell harmlessly onto the top of the goal.

Penalty kicks began with Clarke scoring for the Eagles. After O'Dell made a save on the first shooter, Mattei knotted the shootout at one apiece in the second round. Both squads were denied once and hit a goalpost in the third and fourth rounds. After Cutaia missed the goal on EMU's fifth shot, MacLeod sent the Rockets to the semifinal with a low shot into the left side of the cage.
