Women's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Regional with Wins

Eagles continue play in tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened up play with mixed results here Thursday, Oct. 18, in the ITA Midwest Regional.

“Klara (Supejova) played a good match to advance to the final round of qualifying Friday,” EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray said.  “As a whole, we can play better, so I wasn't real satisfied with the results today. We will keep searching for a higher level of results in this tournament.”

Freshman Supejova and sophomore Daphne Friedrichs both recorded singles wins in the first of the multi-day event.

Supejova had a bye in her first match and then moved on in the bracket after beating Toledo's Lexi Pitt, 6-3, 6-3.

Friedrichs won her first match, 6-4, 6-3, over Youngstown State's Lauren Hankle before falling to DePaul's Kelsey Lawson, 7-6, 6-3.

Junior Nino Mebuke received a bye in her first match and then lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Margharita Sadovnikova of Youngstown State.  Junior Mariya Toncheva lost her opening martch, 6-4, 6-3, to Keti Mebuke of UIC.
