Pulitzer Prize Winner Ira Berkow to Speak at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– Ira Berkow, a Pulitzer Prize winning sportswriter, will explore the role of Jewish Americans and their passion for baseball during a presentation, “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story” Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. The free event will be held at Eastern Michigan University's Student Center Auditorium.
Berkow wrote the script for the award-winning documentary by the same name. He will talk about the film and how the project developed. Reviewers have called “Jews and Baseball” a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry, heroism and the shattering of stereotypes.
The documentary has won numerous awards, including the Best-Editing Award from the Breckenridge Film Festival; the West Coast Premiere from the San Francisco Jewish Festive and the Jerusalem International Festival's International Premiere among others.
Berkow was a sports reporter and columnist for The New York Times from 1981 to 2007, and has written for numerous magazines and newspapers. He shared the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his article, “The Minority Quarterback,” which appeared in The New York Times series “How Race Is Lived in America.” He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1988.
He is the author of 18 books, including “The Man Who Robbed The Pierre: The Story of Bobby Comfort and the Biggest Hotel Robbery Ever,” which was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award for non-fiction; “Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life” (1989) and “To the Hoop: The Seasons of a Basketball Life” (1997).
