The Olds-Marshall Outdoor Track in Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium will be the site for the start and the finish of a 5K Girls on the Run-Southeastern Michigan event Sunday, May 22, 2011.

A total of 1,600 to 2,000 girls are expected to participate in the 5K event with another 7,000 to 9,000 fans and supporters expected to be in attendance to cheer them on during the run.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Eastern Michigan University athletics to partner with a great organzation like Girls on the Run," EMU Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg said. "They have a great mission of educating young women and we are pleased that they are finishing this year's program in Rynearson Stadium. It should be a great atomsphere for everyone involved with the event."

Girls on the Run is a national organization that has a mission of educating and preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program is designed for girls ages 8-14 years old and takes them through a 12-week program. The Girls on the Run-Southeastern Michigan region includes third through eighth graders from five counties: Washtenaw, Lenawee, Jackson, Monroe and Livingston.

As part of the 12-week program, the girls also use fun running games and experimental activities to help to learn more about creating healthy habits, expressing themselves, making good choices and serving their community. The event, which is scheduled to start March 14, culminates in the 5K run which will be held this year at the Olds-Marshall Track beginning at 10 a.m.

One of the major sponsors of Girls on the Run is New Balance shoes while St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti is a presentation sponsor for the 5K run. More than 50 other corporations and businesses contribute to the event.

The Girls on the Run-Southeastern Michigan council, which was founded in 2001, has grown from serving 25 girls at two schools to more than 2,000 participants and families yearly in the Southeastern Michigan region.

That growth in the program has been made possible by the generous support of local businesses and individuals in the five-county communities that are committed to the mission of Girls on the Run.

In 2009 the very first Southeastern Michigan council hosted their initial 5K run and since that time have attracted more than 3,500 runners and hundreds of volunteers and spectators.
