Elcock and Churchwell advance to 1,500-meter finals
Day one & two results
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - Day two of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships brought the competitors a little more than they bargained for on Friday, May 13, as tornado warnings delayed competition for nearly six hours in DeKalb, Ill.
Eastern ran two runners on the day as both Beverly Elcock and Morgan Churchwell ran in the preliminary race of the 1,500-meter run, with each qualifying for the final on the last day of the event. Elcock was able to place eighth, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:38.72. Churchwell crossed three spots later in the 11th position with a time of 4:38.05.
The Eagles did not have a competitor in the heptathlon. EMU now sits in the number seven spot, having picked its only 10 points of day one of the championships when Jessica Hemingway won the pole vault.
Through five events, Kent State holds the top spot with 43 points, followed by Miami with 25 and Buffalo with 21. Akron and Ohio are currently knotted in fourth-place with 20 points each, and Toledo is just above EMU in sixth-place with 15 points. Western Michigan is on the board with nine points and Ball State and Bowling Green are tied for last place with eight points each.
Day three will put the Eagles' strongest athletes in position to pull off a come-from-behind performance and go for the MAC sweep. Events begin Saturday, May 14, at 8 a.m.
