EMU Opens MAC Schedule With Road Win at Toledo

Eagles Turn in Strong Efforts on Both Ends of the Court

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team opened the 2010-11 Mid-American Conference season with a decisive 71-48 win over the University of Toledo Rockets here Saturday night, Jan. 8, 2011, in Savage Arena.
The win leaves the Eagles 1-0 in MAC play and 4-10 overall. Toledo drops to 0-1 and 3-12 overall.
EMU senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) turned in the 32nd double-double of his career with 19 points and 13 rebounds while junior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) added 14 points and six assists and junior center Kamil Janton (Tarnow, Poland-Bartlett (Chicago) chipped in 10 points and hauled down seven rebounds.
Toledo had three players in double figures with Malcolm Griffin scoring 14, Reese Holliday adding 13 and Delino Dear scored 10.
Eastern shot 39.3 percent from the field, hitting 24-of-61 shots while making 9-of-28 triples for 32.1 percent. The Eagles had a whopping 45-31 advantage on the boards while hold Toledo to 36 percent from the field on 18-of-50 attempts.
Lampley opened the game with a long three-point field goal from the top of the key.
EMU would build that lead to five, 7-2, in the early going before the Rockets slowly worked their way back into the game, tying the game at 17-all on a layup and free throw by Griffin at the 6:21 mark.
The Eagles cranked the offense up from that point, however, rolling to a nine-point lead, 31-22, with 1:50 left on a triple from the left corner by guard Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan J.C.) with 1:50 left in the half.
Eastern would take advantage of a tip by Bowdry off a missed three at the halftime buzzer to send the Green and White into intermission with a 33-26 lead.
Bowdry had eight points and eight rebounds in the first half to lead the Eagles while Griffin scored 10.
Thompson connected on a three to open the second half and the Eagles would increase their lead to 13, 41-28, on two free throws by Lampley at the 19-minute mark.
The visitors would keep the offense rolling, going up by 17, 56-39, with 8:19 left on a triple from the top of the key by Bowdry.
Eastern would go on to build the lead to as many as 21, 69-48, at the buzzer.
The Eagles will be home Tuesday, Jan. 11, hosting MAC West Division foe Northern Illinois in a 7 p.m. game.
