YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Steve Repko, the former sports editor of The Ypsilanti Press and a 35-year journalism veteran, died, Dec. 31, 2010, after an extended illness. He was 58 years old.
Repko joined The Ypsilanti Press in 1974 as a sportswriter and became the paper's sports editor in 1976, a post he held until the business closed in June 1994.
While the sports editor, Repko covered all of Eastern Michigan University's athletic teams. One of the highlights of his EMU coverage was traveling to Omaha, Neb. to cover the baseball team at the 1975 and 1976 NCAA College World Series events.
When The Ypsilanti Press closed in 1974, Repko went on to become a correspondent for the Associated Press for the next six years. He joined The Oakland Press sports department in 2000 and remained there the rest of his career, working mainly as a copy editor.
During his sports writing career, Repko especially loved covering baseball games and was a long-time voting member for the Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Baseball Writer's Association of America (BBWAA).
Born in Danbury, Ct., Repko moved with his family to Ypsilanti in 1955 and he went on to graduate from Ypsilanti High School in 1970. He then earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1974 and the day after his graduation was working for The Ypsilanti Press.
The funeral service for Repko will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Stark Funeral Service in Ypsilanti. Burial will follow in Ypsilanti's Highland Cemetary. The family will receive friends starting at noon until the funeral service begins at 3 p.m.
