EMU Athletic Hall of Famer James R. Martin Passes Away

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — James R. Martin, a 1981 Eastern Michigan University Hall of Fame inductee, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Mount Pleasant, Mich. after a long illness. He was 83 years old.
Martin earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball at EMU before graduating in 1950.
Martin then went on to coach for 18 years at Kinde, Flat Rock and Riverview High Schools. At Riverview he coached Lloyd Carr, Woody Widenhofer and Bill McCartney. Martin was also voted into the Riverview Hall of Fame as well as the state of Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame.
From Riverview, Martin moved on to Ypsilanti Lincoln High School where he served 15 years as a principal.
Martin was the chairman of the EMU Football Bust in 1970-71, was the president of the E-Letterwinners Club in 1976 as a charter member of the organization, and also served on the EMU Alumni Board of Directors from 1983-84.
One of his sons, John Martin, was a standout baseball player at EMU from 1975-78 and was recently voted into the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2010.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Flat Rock. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time for the service at 11 a.m.
