Eagles Close Regular Season with 6-1 Win Over Ball State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team ended its regular season with a 6-1 win over visiting Ball State University Saturday, April 24, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Eagles (8-13, 2-6 Mid-American Conference) wrapped up the season with a 6-2 record at home. It was the team's best home record since the 2006 team went 5-2 in Ypsilanti. The Cardinals dropped to 7-14 on the season (1-8 MAC).

EMU dominated from start to finish, only dropping the No. 5 singles match.

Julia Breuss and Miriam Westerink# started the day by taking the No. 1 doubles match 8-4, and their teammates would follow. The duos of Xu Chang and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr, and Karina Ahuja and Marcela Rivero each won their matches, 8-3 and 8-1, respectively, to take the doubles' point.

Westerink had the most impressive win of the day for the Green and White as she won her first set 6-2 and blanked her opponent in the second set, 6-0, to win the match.

This match was also important for the Eagles because it secured the team a No. 6 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament. EMU will face Western Michigan on the second day of the tournament, Friday, April 30, at 2 p.m. Eastern lost to Western by the slimmest of margins, 3-4, in the team's earlier match in Ypsilanti this year. This time, WMU will have home field advantage as the MAC Championships will be held in Kalamazoo, Mich., home of the Broncos.

"We did a good job of coming out to get the win we needed to push us to the No. 6 seed for the tournament. Doubles went fairly smooth today and we got some hard fought singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6. Now we turn our attention to facing Western on Friday."
