EMU Athletics Program to Participate in Local Reading Event

Head coaches English and Gilbert join two student-athletes at WCC, Feb. 22

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University department of athletics will partner with Splendor Education Consulting for the first Washtenaw County African-American Read-In, Feb. 22, from 6-8 p.m. at Washtenaw Community College's Morris Lawrence Building.

EMU Head Football Coach Ron English and EMU women's Head Basketball Coach AnnMarie Gilbert, will join women's basketball players Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) and India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) at the event, "Athletes Read."

Both English and Gilbert will be guest speakers and the two student-athletes will participate in a panel to discuss the importance of reading in their daily lives.

The African-American Read-In is an international literacy event founded by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. The purpose of this event is to join with more than one million people during National Black History Month to discuss the importance of reading, hearing and understanding literature authored by African-Americans.

The event is free and open to the public.
