E-Club to Induct Seven Into the EMU Athletics Hall of Fame

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University E-Club, a group of former EMU varsity athletic letterwinners, has announced the addition of seven new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2010 will be honored at a Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, in the EMU Student Center on campus.

The Class of 2010 includes: Clement Chukwu (track), Dawn (Godfrey) Heck (softball), Laurie (Hubbard) Leonhardt (women's swimming), JoAnn (LeFevre) McBroom (women's basketball), Hildred Lewis (football and men's track), John Martin (baseball), and Barry Stokes (football).

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductees, the E-Club will present Ed Mizinski, a past E-Club president and former EMU football player, with the Ron Oestrike Distinguished Service Award. The award, named after former EMU baseball-coaching legend Ron Oestrike, was first presented at the 2008 Hall of Fame ceremony to Oestrike. The award is voted on by the E-Club Executive Board and is presented to individuals that have been instrumental in assisting the E-Club.

This year's class will mark the 35th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. followed immediately by a buffet luncheon.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame ceremony and luncheon, which also includes tickets for the men's and women's basketball doubleheaders at the Convocation Center, are $45 each and can be purchased by calling Amanda Decker at the EMU Foundation, 734.481.2335.

The women's basketball team will host Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. and the men's team will take on a to-be-named opponent in a Bracketbuster Game set to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Hall of Famers will be honored at the games in the Convocation Center.

CLEMENT CHUKWU
Graduated in 1999
Men's Track: Outstanding sprinter on the men's track team...Was a six-time NCAA All-America and won the 400-meter run at the 1999 NCAA Championships...Finished second in the 200 meters at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championship and was second in the 400 meters at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Meet...Was an eight-time Mid-American Conference champion...Won the Drake Relays title in the 400-meter run and was also a part of the winning 800-meter relay team...Won the MAC outdoor 400-meter title three times, 1997 (:46.13), 1998 (:46.27), and 1999 (:45.61)...Named the MAC's Most Valuable Performer at the 1997 Indoor Championships and the Most Outstanding Performer in 1998...Ran in the 400 meters in the 1996 Olympics, making it to the quarterfinals. Competed on the 4x400-meter relay team for Nigeria at the 2000 Olympic Games that won the Silver Medal which was later upgraded to a Gold Medal when the winning U.S. team was disqualified....Also won Gold Medals in the 400 meter run at the 1998 African Games and the 1997 Universiade Games.

DAWN (GODFREY) HECK
Graduated in 1996
Softball: One of the top softball players in EMU history...Earned four varsity letters (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996)...Earned first-team All-Mid-American honors as a second-baseman in 1996...Holds EMU career records for: At Bats (741), Runs Scored (122), and Stolen Bases (107), and is third in Hits (206)...Still ranked in single-season stolen bases, ranked second in 1996 with 41, fourth in 1994 with 30, and fifth in 1993 with 26...When she graduated she was ranked in the top five in several Mid-American Conference career statistics, including being second in at bats (741), and fifth in stolen bases (107)...Went on to play for Daly's Restaurant in post-graduate softball action and was an All-American selection in 1995 in ASA Class A fastpitch action.

LAURIE (HUBBARD) LEONHARDT
Graduated in 1982
Women's Swimming: Won three Mid-American Conference championships at the inaugural league meet in 1981...Won the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle...Prior to EMU's MAC affiliation she was successful on the NCAA Division II national level...Graduated with a degree in business.

JoANNE (LeFEVRE) McBROOM
Graduated in 1987
Women's Basketball: Earned four varsity letters from 1984-87...First-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 1986-87...Finished her career as the fifth-leading scorer in history with 1,425 points and was fifth in field goals made (529), second in free-throw attempts (371), third in free throws made (263) and third in assists (380)...Has two games in the top four in single-game assists with 12 against Kent State (1-21-87), and 11 versus Kent State (2-18-88).

HILDRED LEWIS
Graduated in 1966
Football and Track: Excelled in both football and track for Eastern Michigan, earning four varsity letters in each sport in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1965...Served as co-captain of the football team in 1965, and earned All-Americans honors as a half-miler in June 1966...One of the top hitters and defensive backs in college football, and outstanding middle-distance (Utility runner) man in track…Ran as EMU's No. 1 miler for four years and set more than a few meet and varsity records competing in the mile, 1,000-yard, 880-yard run, the mile, intermediate hurdles, javelin, distance medley relay, two-mile relay, mile relay, and 4 x110-yard relay… His 1:51.2 880 yd. time was second-best in school history when he graduated...Ran the leadoff leg in the mile and two mile relay teams that set new school indoor and outdoor records...Also ran on the two-mile relay team that set an EMU record with a time of 7:32.8 in the 1966 season that stood for five years until it was broken in 1970… Went on to try out with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers but injuries ended his attempt at making the team… Also attended the Toronto Argonauts' camp after recovering from previous injuries.

JOHN R. MARTIN
Graduated in 1978
Baseball: Four-year letterwinner for the EMU baseball team as a left-handed pitcher from 1975-78...Became a workhorse on the EMU staff...Played on the 1975 and 1976 teams that finished fifth and second respectively at the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb....Was one of the key starters during EMU's 1978 MAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Mideast Regional...Led the pitching staff with a 6-4 record and a 1.99 ERA and led the squad to a 4-2 win over Missouri in the Mideast Regional in Ann Arbor....Ranks near the top of the EMU career record book for the following: season strikeouts (5th with 87 in 1977), complete games (5th with eight in 1978), and sixth in innings pitched (101.0 in 1977)...Drafted in the 27th round of the 1978 Major League Draft by the Detroit Tigers...Went on to pitch in the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals and was a member of the 1982 St. Louis team that won the World Series...Recorded pitching wins against both Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton.

BARRY STOKES
Graduated in 1996
Football: Earned four letters for EMU from 1992-95...Went on to play in the NFL from 1998 until retiring in 2009...Played with the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions... Was named the Detroit Lions representative for the 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award...Has been actively involved with the EMU football program for the past 10 years...Served as a captain of the 1995 EMU football team that recorded a 6-5 record...Selected as a first-team All-Mid-American Conference offensive lineman in 1995.
