Rivero Advances to Singles Title Match

Sophomore, Rivero, to Play for Second Title of Fall Season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) continued her season unbeaten streak in singles competition Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Gopher Invitational during the second day of a three-day tournament.
Rivero, after winning convincingly yesterday, defeated Nebraska's Chelsea Finnegan in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2 in the quarterfinals in her flight. Her next match of the day pitted her against freshman teammate Celine Donnet (Hemiksem, Belgium-Institut Deschamps),who had a bye during the opening day. Donnet took the first set, 2-6, before Rivero rallied to a win with 6-4 and 6-2 set victories.
Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) also won her quarterfinal match, defeating Iowa's Jessica Young in three sets, before bowing out in the semifinals.
“We had another solid day today and winning all of our three-set matches is big,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “It shows that physically and mentally we were locked in today. Our conditioning level isn't where we need it yet, but that will come through the fall. Hopefully we put in one more strong effort [Sunday].”
On Sunday, Sept. 27, the Eagles will play for one doubles title and one singles title in the final day of the Invitational.
