MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – On the final day of competition at the Gopher Invitational, Sunday, Sept. 27, Eastern Michigan University was unable to turn in a successful performance in either of its two title matches.

In the Lynx Flight title match, the tandem of junior Xu Chang (Beijing, China) and sophomore Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) took a commanding 6-3 lead over University at Buffalo's Anna Subenkova and Kira Golenko. But after a short rally by the Bulls duo, Eastern lost the match 8-6.
Rivero also reached the finals in her singles flight, but saw her season-long undefeated streak come to a halt after falling in straight sets to Nebraska's Abby Buxton, 6-3 and 6-1.
Eagle sophomore Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) was able to snag a third place finish in the Twins Flight with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tamara Markovic of Buffalo.
“Overall, we had a decent showing this weekend and I believe we are making some improvements,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “I was disappointed in the doubles loss [Sunday], as they let a 6-3 lead slip away, but the weekend as a whole was good. We will look to get healthier this week as we enter a challenging Wolverine Invite next weekend."
The Eagles take an eight-mile trip to Ann Arbor this coming weekend, Oct. 2-4, for a three-day affair as competitors in the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan.
