Eagles Advance Three in First Day at Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University advanced two singles players and one doubles team to the second round of The Gopher Invitational, Friday, Sept. 25, at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

In EMU's second fall invitational of the season, the duo of Xu Chang (Beijing, China) and Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) defeated University at Buffalo tandem Diana Toia and Sofya Ivanyuk by the score of 8-5.

The sophomore Rivero also advanced in singles play. She defeated UB's Ivanyuk in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3. Rivero continued to roll this weekend after capturing a singles' title last week at the BGSU Invitational.

Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) was the other Eagle to have success in singles competition yesterday. She breezed past Buffalo's Anna Subenkova in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0.

“We had some ups and downs [Friday],” said Eagles Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Julia and Karina [Ahuja] are still trying to shake some injuries and aren't playing at their best. We'll continue to get a lot of matches under our belt at this tourney and look to improve through each day.”

The Eagles will continue competition through the weekend at the Invitational.
