Four Other Eagles Get Second-Place Finish

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-- Eastern Michigan University sophomore Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) won three matches to capture a singles flight title for the Eagles at the Bowling Green State University Invitational this past weekend.

Four other Eagles also earned second-place finishes. After two opening-round wins, freshman Celine Donnet (Hemiksem, Belgium-Institut Deschamps) lost narrowly to Akron's Anna Baronayte, 6-4, 7-5. Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) and Karina Ahuja (New Delhi, India-Modern School) also grabbed runner-up spots.

In doubles competition, it was the pair of Ahuja and Donnet which finished second overall in their flight.

“We had some hobbled kids that fought pretty hard Sunday, however, the opponents that beat us were just better than us,” said Eagles Head Coach Ryan Ray. “It was nice to see Marcela pick up a flight title, and to have four second-place finishes in other flights was a good all-around showing. We will have a light week of practice to rest up for the invitational next weekend.”

Team scores were not kept in the two-day, 10-team match, but individual champions were crowned in each of nine singles and four doubles flights. Aside from EMU, the other competing schools were Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Detroit, IPFW, IUPUI, Xavier and Youngstown State, as well as Mid-American Conference foes Akron and BGSU, the hosting team.

The Eagles will next be in competition this coming weekend, Sept. 25-27, at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
