The junior and sophomore take two more consolation matches at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Despite another injury-plagued day, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was able to advance its two winners from Saturday, Oct. 3, on the second day of the Wolverine Invitational.

EMU junior Xu Chang (Beijing, China) and freshman Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) each picked up singles victories again today after defeating two Western Michigan players on the first day of competition. Xu rallied to defeat South Carolina's Matty Saari-Bystrom in three sets in a consolation semifinal after falling in the first set. Rivero also won her consolation semifinal flight. She swept Miami (Ohio) player Sydney Bridger 6-3 and 6-2.

“We only had three players who were physically able to compete today and we picked up two very solid singles wins,” said EMU head coach Ryan Ray. “Chang and Marcela will each have a consolation match Sunday and we'll look to get everyone else back healthy in the next two weeks for the end of the fall season.”

The Eagles weren't at full strength in doubles action, as Xu and Rivero lost two matches to Big Ten duos from Purdue and Michigan. The final day of action for the Eagles will be tomorrow, Oct. 4, as Eastern hopes to capture the consolation finals matches.
