Ann Arbor, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Fighting through injuries and sickness, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was able to take two consolation quarterfinal matches against conference rival Western Michigan, Friday, Oct. 2, on the first day of the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
EMU junior Xu Chang (Beijing, China) defeated WMU's Yumi Matsuto in three sets, while sophomore Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) took down Western's Rachel Denny in a two-set match.
Eagle freshman Julia Breuss (Dornbirn, Austria-Sportgymnasium) had perhaps one of the toughest draws of the day, having been matched up against nationally ranked, No. 29 Ana Zubori of South Carolina. Breuss was downed in straight sets, but was able to gain valuable experience by competing in such a tough match this early in her career.
“The majority of our players were either sick or injured this week, and some were sick and injured,” said fourth year Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Unfortunately there are limits as to how much they can perform in a day. We felt it was wise to pull out of the round of doubles tonight to rest our wounds so we can give our best Saturday. This is a very challenging tournament as expected. We had a few competitive losses and picked up a couple good wins over Western. We'll battle again throughout the rest of the weekend and see what we can do.”
The Eagles return to action Oct. 3, for a second day of competition at the Wolverine Invitational.
