KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team made the trek down Interstate-94 to Kalamazoo, Mich. for this weekend’s Bronco Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University. The tournament’s first day included two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Friday here at Sorensen Courts.
"I was pleased with the matches we won today," said third-year head coach Ryan Ray. "We have shown some good progress in the last two weeks. The matches that we lost in singles we competed well. Unfortunately Karina (Ahuja) had to withdraw for the rest of the weekend with a shoulder injury, but I hope to have her ready for our next tournament in two weeks."
In the first round of Black Flight Singles, freshman Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas a Kempis) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Purdue University’s Joanna Craven. In her consolation match, Miriam Westerink was able to bounce back with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over WMU’s Amanda Moccia
In EMU’s only other Black Flight Singles, freshman Karina Ahuja (New Delhi, India-Modern School) was forced to retire from her opening round singles match versus West Virginia University’s Ashley Pilsbury.
In the Gold Singles Flight, senior Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) fell to the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Elene Antakova, 7-5, 6-2. In her consolation appearance, Woo dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Purdue’s Jennifer Rabot.
Freshman Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) won both of her matches of the day in the Brown Singles Flight. First posting a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory over UIC’s Ulrikke Von Ubisch, before moving on to the quarterfinals for a 0-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over WMU’s Jenny Nalepa.
On the double’s action, the duo of Westerink and Woo fell to Illinois-Chicago’s Illinca Cristescu and Jenna Reisch, 8-3., in the first round of silver flight doubles. While the pairing of Rivero and UIC’s Von Ubisch defeated WVU’s Gabriela Blaskovicova and Catie Wickline, 8-6.
