EMU Comes Up Short Versus UMBC

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team took the early 1-0 lead, but the University of Maryland-Baltimore County was able to pull out the 3-2 decision Saturday evening, Aug. 30, in the finale of the William and Mary Tribe Invitational. The Eagles had an impressive early run winning 25-23, but the Retrievers took the next two 25-18 and 25-19. Eastern battled back for a 25-22 decision in the fourth set, but UMBC took the victory with a 15-13 game five decision.

The Eagles had an impressive early run winning 25-23, but the Retrievers took the next two 25-18 and 25-19. Eastern battled back for a 25-22 decision in the fourth set, but UMBC took the victory with a 15-13 game five decision.
Statistically the Retrievers (2-1) and Eagles (1-2) were on near-even ground as EMU hit .184 (63 kills, 24 errors, 212 attempts) and UMBC averaged .211 (69 kills, 24 errors, 213 attempts).
Senior Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) paced the EMU attack with 14 kills on the match. Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) notched another double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs, while senior Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green) added a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 33 digs. Freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) chalked up 49 assists and 17 digs for the Eagles.

For UMBC, four players tallied double-digit kills, with Sabrina Hoeks’ 18 leading the way for the Retreivers. Alyssa Lang recorded 17 kills to go along with Bridget Sheetz’s 14 kills and Sarah Joy’s 10 kills and six block assits.
Head coach Kim Berrington and her crew return to action Friday, Sept. 5, at the Bradley University Tournament in Peoria, Ill. The Eagles will tangle with SIU-Edwardsville at 11 a.m. CST before squaring off with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 8 p.m. CST. Eastern closed out the tournament Saturday, Sept. 6, against the host Braves at 3:30 p.m. CST.
