YPSILANTI, Mich. — It was another record-smashing season in both athletics and academics for Eastern Michigan University student-athletes in 2007-08.

In 2007-08, EMU student-athletes won four Mid-American Conference regular-season championships and one MAC Tournament crown. Additionally, 29 Eagles collected individual league titles in cross country, swimming and diving, and track and field.

For their efforts, 69 EMU student-athletes earned All-MAC honors (38 - first team, 29 - second team, 2 - honorable mention) in 2007-08. Additionally, the conference office awarded nine Athlete of the Year awards to Eastern Michigan standouts, while acknowledging EMU on 48 different occasions for Player of the Week accolades in 19 of EMU's 21 sports.

Furthermore, 51 student-athletes were singled out for Academic All-MAC honors. Also, a total of nine EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to just one male and one female student-athlete from nominees of all 12 league schools.

In the classroom, men's swimmer Don Ellison (King City, Ontario-King City Secondary) collected ESPN the Magazine men’s at large Academic All-American third team accolades. In total, 10 EMU student-athletes earned ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors to go along with men's golfer Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario-Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) garnering Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar accolades from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

On the women's side, golfers Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) and Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) were selected to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar teams. The women’s rowing program had nine rowers named scholar-athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Heather Anderson (St. Catharines-Ontario, Canada-Holy Cross Secondary School), Maria Clary (Jackson, Mich.-Lumen Christi), Kate Dirks (St. Catharines-Ontario, Canada-Eden), Jackie Domin (Canton, Mich.-Canton), Kristen Dunkin (Tipp City, Ohio-Tippecanoe), Beth Logsdon (Port Clinton, Ohio-Port Clinton), Noel McAuliffe (Goodrich, Mich.-Goodrich), Becky Ohnmeiss (Marquette, Mich.-Marquette Senior) and Alex Stoddart (St. Catharines-Ontario, Canada-Holy Cross Secondary School) all earned the honor for the first time in their careers.

All of the student-athletes and coaches hard work came to fruition, as the MAC Office presented EMU the Reese Trophy which is awarded annually to the top overall men’s athletic program in the league. The Reese Trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, the first-ever MAC Commissioner who served the league from its inception in 1946 until retiring in 1964.

The Eastern Michigan women’s program turned in a fifth-place finish in the battle for the MAC women's all-sports trophy, the Jacoby Trophy, named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby who served the league from 1971-82. Jacoby is credited with incorporating women’s athletics into the league’s structure. Miami won the 2007-08 Jacoby title with a 9.667 average while the Eagles were fifth at 7.700.

The men’s cross country team jump-started 2007-08 with a Mid-American Conference championship in the fall and the men’s baseball team closed out the year on a winning note late in the spring with a tournament title at the 2008 MAC Championship.

In between those league titles the Eagles also added MAC crowns in men’s swimming and diving, men’s indoor track, and men’s golf. The women's basketball and men's baseball teams also added a pair of MAC West Division crowns. All of this comes on the heels of the Eastern Michigan University athletics program setting a Mid-American Conference record with eight team championships in men’s and women’s competition during the 2006-07 season.
