The Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half of play. Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) led off with a double to left field and scored after Leonard doubled down the left-field line. Leonard scored after an error by Falcon third baseman Clay Duncan, allowing sophomore designated hitter Todd Graves (St. Mary’s, Ohio-St. Mary’s) to reach first. A second Duncan error lead to EMU’s third run of the inning as Graves crossed the plate to round out the initial scoring burst.
Unfortunately for the Green and White, the Bowling Green offense answered the challenge, scoring 12 runs over the next four innings to take a commanding 12-3 lead. BG plated three runs in the bottom half of the second and added two more in the third when Brandon McFarland and David Borcherdt hit back-to-back homers, running the score to 5-3.
The Falcons continued to add to their lead, scoring five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. EMU closed the gap to 12-5 in the top of the seventh after an RBI double by junior Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) scored Graves. Senior Steve Bradshaw’s (Lapper, Mich.-West) RBI single scored through the left side scored Powell, but was not enough to keep the rally going.
BGSU tacked on one in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the bottom of the eighth inning, increasing its lead to 15-5. Brian Hangbers took the mound in the eighth for Bowling Green and limited the Eagles to just one hit over the final two innings of play.
