Junior Stephany Fleet captures medalist honors with a 146
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team not only made history at the EKU Spring Invitational Saturday afternoon, April 5, but it did so in resounding fashion by blowing away the rest of the seven-team field in the process.
Eastern Michigan continued its outstanding campaign by dominating the field here at the par-72, 5,817-yard course Arlington Golf Club with a 20-shot victory - its record-setting fourth overall title during the 2007-08 season. The Eagles improved to 44-13 in four spring tournaments. The four tournament wins overall are the most in a school year. Second-place Winthrop finished with a 626, while Tennessee Tech (633) placed third followed by Eastern Kentucky (636), Evansville (636), USC Upstate (644) and Ohio (651).
The win marks the 12th overall title in the program’s 14-year history and the eighth during head coach Sandy Wagner’s three-year tenure as head coach. Additionally, the victory is the second consecutive EKU Spring Invitational title for the Eagles, as the squad won the weather-shortened 2007 EKU Spring Invitational trophy with a 646 (324-322).
Junior golfer Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) made it a clean sweep when she captured low medalist honors with a two-over 146 (73-73) for the two-round event. Fleet’s victory was the third of her career and her second this season. During the fall, Fleet won the Wolverine Invitational, Sept. 29-30, 2007, when she notched a 219 (72-70-77) to claim the prestigious title. Additionally, her first-place finish is her fourth top five finish of the year and the ninth of her stellar career.
Always steady senior Catherine Fortin (Beauceville, Canada-Polyvalente St. Francois) also continued her exceptional play with a third-place finish. Fortin shot four-over 148 (73-75) for the tournament and notched her 17th career top 10 finish as well as her 14th top five showing.
In addition to Fleet and Fortin’s fine play, standout Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) finished tied for fourth with a 152 (77-75), followed by Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) (160) at 18th and Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) (168) at 36th. Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) and Melissa Spalding (Monore, Mich.-Monroe) played as individuals and finished tied for 27th and 33rd, respectively.
The schedule originally called for two rounds on Friday and one round on Saturday, however heavy rain made it impossible to begin play until Friday afternoon.
The Green and White return to the links April 19-20 in Columbus, Ohio for the annual Lady Buckeye Invitational at the Scarlett Course.
