YPSILANTI
, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team pounded out 20 hits en route to its 15-1 win over Olivet College here Wednesday, April 23, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles took an early 5-0 lead and scored in all but two innings of play in their fourth consecutive victory.

With the win, EMU improves to 14-24, 10-2 MAC on the year while Olivet falls to 11-15.

Five Green and White pitchers saw action against Olivet, with true freshman Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) getting the start. Combs (2-0) pitched five and a third innings allowing just three hits while striking out two. Leading the offense was senior Mike Boyd (Huntington Woods, Mich.-Berkley) and junior Todd Graves (St. Mary’s, Ohio-St. Mary’s). Boyd posted a season-high four RBI in his 3-for-4 performance at the plate while Graves went 3-for-5 with a walk and scored four times, including an eighth inning two-run bomb over the left-field wall.

Along with Boyd and Graves, junior Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston), senior Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-West) and freshmen Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and John Carrier (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Detroit Central Catholic) all enjoyed multi-hit performances today.

The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bradshaw doubled to left field, scoring Powell for the first run of the game. Bradshaw, starting at designated hitter instead of his usual first base spot, scored the second run of the inning off a Josh Ivan (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) single through the left side.

EMU plated three more runs in the bottom half of the third, increasing its lead to 5-0. Graves singled and scored off a Leonard double down the right-field line. Carrier then singled through the left side, scoring Leonard to make it 4-0. Carrier, getting his first career start behind home plate, went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Kyle Rhoad’s (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) sacrifice fly to center field allowed Boyd to score from third for the final run of the inning.

The Green and White tacked on three in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning to build a comfortable 12-0 lead over the Comets.

Olivet’s lone run of the game came in the eighth inning when Brandon Goodman sailed a Bobby Henderson (Milford, Mich.-Detroit Catholic) pitch over the left-field wall.

Closing out the game for the Eagles was senior Matt Dimich (Fenton, Mich.-Lake Fenton). Dimich, making his first appearance this season due to nagging injuries, struck out his first batter faced before walking two straight. With two on and one out, Dimich got Calvin Gadwass to fly out to left field and Josh Norlock to fly out to center to end the game.

The Eagles are in action this weekend, April 25-27, traveling to DeKalb, Ill. For a three-game series with the Northern Illinois University Huskies. The Eagles and Huskies are the top two teams in the West Division, with EMU sitting in first place, two games up on NIU. First pitch for Friday’s game is slated for 3 p.m.
