Eagles finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference regular season
BUFFALO, N.Y.-- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team ended the regular season by handing the University at Buffalo a 4-3 decision Saturday at the University Tennis Club in Buffalo, N.Y. The Eagles finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a 5-3 record, the program's best since the 2004-05 season. Western Michigan University won its fourth straight regular season crown.
Senior Vanessa Frankowski concluded the 2008 regular season with a win, defeating Andreea Novaceanu in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. She finishes with a 7-1 MAC record, with the lone loss coming against Western Michigan. She also recorded her 75th career singles win.
Aleksandra Stankovic also closed out the regular season with a win, defeating Diana Toia, 6-2, 6-2. She too has a 7-1 MAC mark, losing only to Toledo.
Joanna Woo recorded the final singles victory for the Eagles, thus securing the team win. She defeated Tina Jacob in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. This was her third victory in a row.
Flavia Micati picked up a win in an exhabition match, defeating Anna Subenkova 8-2.
In doubles play, the Eagles took the point as Frankowski and Tina Bestehorn defeated Denis Harijanto and Diana Popescu by an 8-6 mark. Sandra Wikstrom and Stankovic blanked Toja and Smaranda Stan, 8-0.
The MAC Tournament runs from April 25-27 and will be hosted by Buffalo. The Eagles will be the number four seed in this year's tournament, as they tied with Toledo's record, but because the Rockets won the regular season contest, the Eagles will be the fourth seed, playing Bowling Green. The Green and White will face the Falcons Friday, April 25, at 10 a.m. to open the tournament.
