Eagles win four singles matches to claim the victory
YPSILANTI, Mich. The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team ended its four-match losing streak today at the Chippewa Racquet Club in a Mid-American Conference match against No. 56 Bowling Green State University. The Eagles took four of six singles matches to claim a 4-3 victory over the visiting Falcons.
"We did a good job of showing a lot more energy form start to finish," said head coach Ryan Ray. "BGSU is one of the better teams in the MAC and this is a good way to start out the season. We did let some leads slip away, but we did just enough to win the match.
The Eagles are now 5-9 on the season and 1-0 in MAC play while the Falcons end their 11 match winning streak, falling to 11-1 (0-1 MAC) on the season.
The Falcons took the early lead, claiming the doubles point after winning two out of three matches. The Eagles won at the No. 2 doubles with Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom earning the victory by defeating Jenna Nausbaum and Andrea Volle 8-5. EMU lost a heartbreaker at the No. 3 doubles as Aditi Krishnan and Joanna Woo fell 8-7 to Katia Babina and Sam Kintzel on a tiebreaker (5).
EMU stormed back in singles play. The first Eagle to claim a match was Krishnan at the second singles spot, who lost only four games in a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Christine Chiricosta. Wikstrom was next at the No. 3 spot, defeating Babina in two sets, 7-6, 6-3. In the second set, Wikstrom went on a 4-1 run during the last five points to take the set and the match point.
Stankovic picked up the third point for the Eagles, taking a 6-3, 6-3 decision from Stef Menoff. Stankovic won the last three game points in set one and opened up with the first three in set two to take the match win.
Vanessa Frankowski, at No. 1 singles, had one of the hardest wins against Kelsey Jakupcin. Frankowski took the first set by a score of 6-4, but Jakupcin would not give up. Frankowski opened up the second set 5-2 before Jakupcin came storming back to tie it at 5 and then take the next two to win the second set, 7-6, forcing a third. In the third set, Frankowski was able to hold on for the 7-5 win.
The Eagles will face Western Michigan University tomorrow, March 22. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
