Eagles in second place after 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Behind a record-setting showing by the 800 freestyle relay team, the Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team accumulated 66 points on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Alumni Arena.

The Eagles started out the evening with a sixth place finish in the 200 medley relay.  The team of Tracy Morgan, Sheila Carson, Leeza Moser and Catherine Lee Ha finished with a time of 1:44.81, grabbing 26 points for the Green and White.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Steph Cholyk, Hannah Burandt, Alissa Ricard and Madeleine Pilchard followed that up with a first place showing, netting 40 points for EMU.  The Eagles finished the race with a time of 7:15.91, setting a conference record and a pool record.  The time was also an NCAA provisional mark.  The relay team bested a MAC standard set by the Eagles last season, which was 7:21.80.

Following the first day of competition, Toledo leads the meet with 74 points, with EMU a close second with 66 points. Ohio and Miami are close behind with 64 points.

The MAC Championship meet will continue tomorrow, Feb. 21, with the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay races, as well as one-meter diving taking place.  Preliminary competition will begin at 11 a.m., with diving beginning at 1 p.m.  Finals for both swimming and diving will begin at 7 p.m.
