FARMVILLE, Va. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team began the 2008 campaign with two wins Friday afternoon at Lancer Field. EMU defeated Bucknell University in a neutral site game, 12-7. The Eagles then began play in the Longwood Lead-Off Classic by defeating the host Longwood University, 2-1.
EMU is 2-0 following the first day of the 2008 season, the first time the Eagles have started 2-0 since 2000.
In the opening game of the day versus Bucknell, the Eagles used a five-run third inning to take an 8-3 lead. EMU never looked back en route to a 12-7 victory over the Bison. Picking up the win for the Eagles was freshman Jaclyn Caro, who gave up five hits and one earned run in relief. Offensively, EMU totaled 12hits on the afternoon. Junior catcher Heather Han led the Eagles, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. Sophomore Jessica Patterson picked up her first career hit, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. Caro also had a good day offensively, going 2-for-3, hitting a home run in her first collegiate game.
The Eagles then played the host school Longwood University to start play in the Longwood Lead-Off Classic, beating the Lancers 2-1. EMU once again did its damage in the third inning, scoring both runs during the top of the third. Freshman Kari Chambers pitched a complete game, giving up only three hits and one run, while fanning five batters. Sophomore Jenny Scherer led the Green and White offense, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Eagles will continue play in the Longwood Lead-Off Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16, at noon. The Green and White will take on Bucknell again, this time as part of the tournament. EMU will also play Morehead State University, with a start time of 4 p.m.
