Eagles’ offense rolls in 79-43 win over Alma
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team came up with a fast-paced offense , added a strong rebounding effort and played some stingy defense on the way to a 79-43 win over a visiting Alma College team here Sunday, Nov. 9, afternoon in an exhibition game played in the Convocation Center.
The Eagles scored 38 points in the first half and 41 in the second half and out-rebounded Alma, 59-29, to cruise to the 36-point victory.
Head coach Charles E. Ramsey’s Eagles had four players in double figures led by junior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) with 14 points while Kyle Dodd (Rockwood, Ontario, Canada-Ross Collegiate) and sophomore guard Solomon Farris (Detroit, Mich.-Osborn) added 12 each and sophomore forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor Truman (Mich.)) scored 10.
The Eagles shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the field and limited the visitors to just 24.6 percent (15-of-61).
After a slow start, Alma scored the first points at the 18:18 mark on a jumper by sophomore guard Jordan Reddit. Eastern then scored the next six straight points on a jumper by Dodd, a follow-up tip off a missed shot by Wendale Farrow (Sacramento, Calif.-Mira Loma-Indian River C.C.) and two foul shots by Dodd.
Alma came back with a quick flurry of its own over the next four minutes and cut EMU’s lead to 11-9, on a three-point field goal and a two pointer by Reddit. Eastern bounced back by out-scoring the Scots, 11-2 over the next five minutes to take a convincing 22-11 lead at the 5:32 mark.
The Eagles would continue their offensive onslaught, rolling to a 27-11 advantage with 4:21 left on the clock, but the Scots would mount a quick comeback at that point, cutting the EMU lead to 12, 29-17 with 1:57 left.
Eastern would close out the half with nine unanswered points to head into the locker room with a 38-17 lead.
The Eagles enjoyed a balanced scoring attack in the first half with two players, Dodd and Dobbins, each scoring eight points while Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton Academy) leading the way with six rebounds. Porter paced the Scots with nine first-half points.
The Eagles came out of intermission on fire, out-scoring the visitors 12-3 over the first six minutes to take a commanding 50-22 lead with 14:38 left in the game and EMU kept the margin above 30 points the rest of the contest.
The Eagles will open the 2008-09 regular season at home Friday, Nov. 14, in a noon non-conference game against Marygrove College. The game has been designated "Education Day" with more than 1,000 local elementary students invited for pre-game activities followed by the EMU-Marygrove contest.
