EMU puts four in double figures against Lady Frogs

 
CANCUN, Mexico – Despite putting four players in double figures, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team fell to No. 22 Texas Christian University, 71-55, Friday, Nov. 28 in the finale of the Caribbean Challenge.  
 
The Eagles fall to 2-4 on the year while TCU improves to 6-1. EMU was led by freshman Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) with 17 points while Tara Johnson (Flint, Mich.-Flint Hamady) notched her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 boards. Sophomores Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) and Sydney Huntley-Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) both went for 11 on the afternoon.
 
EMU struggled offensively, shooting only 34 percent (22-for-64) from the field and 26 percent (7-for-27) from beyond the arc. The Lady Frogs also forced the Eagles into a season-high 23 turnovers, resulting in 27 TCU points.
 
The teams went basket for basket in the first half until TCU’s Rachel Rentschler hit a jumper with 9:40 remaining in the first half, allowing the Lady Frogs to take a lead they would not relinquish.
 
TCU went to the lockerroom with a 34-29 lead after forcing the Eagles into 14 first half turnovers. Neither team shot well in the first 20 minutes, with the Lady Frogs hitting at a 42 percent (14-for-33) clip, compared to 39 percent (11-for-28) for the Eagles. Leading the Green and White at halftime was James with 11 points. Johnson came off the bench to grab eight rebounds in just seven minutes.
 
TCU went on a decisive 10-0 run over a three-minute span, allowing its lead to reach 12 points with a little over 12:25 remaining. The Eagles were never able to get within single digits the rest of the contest.
 
The Eagles return to the states and to the hardcourt Tuesday, Dec. 2 when they play host to No. 14/10 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
