Junior quarterback picks up conference academic accolades for the second time in his career
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Eastern Michigan University junior quarterback Andy Schmitt (St. Johns Mich.-St. Johns) was named the Mid-American Conference’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 5. This marks Schmitt’s second career MAC academic honor and the first since he won the award Sept. 27, 2007. EMU sophomore women’s golfer Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.–Lake Orion) and Central Michigan University soccer player Shay Mannino shared this week’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Week award.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
Schmitt, who holds a 3.37 GPA in mathematics-secondary education, directed the EMU offense to 410 total yards on 68 plays in the Eagles’ 24-21 come-from-behind victory at Bowling Green State University, Oct. 4. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown.
Trailing by a 21-17 margin, Schmitt moved the Eagles 77 yards in just six plays, including tossing the winning score to senior wide receiver Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) with just 36 seconds left in the game. The victory snapped the Eagles’ nine-game losing skid to the Falcons, and marked the first EMU victory in Bowling Green, Ohio since Nov. 12, 1988.
EMU heads out of the conference Saturday, Oct. 11, for a non-conference date with Army in West Point, N.Y. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN Classic
