Senior Josh Karanja run career-best to lead the Green and White

NOTRE DAME, Ind.- With a full squad on hand, senior Josh Karanja's (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) 10th place individual mark led the Eagles to a 10th place team finish, accumulating 290 points at the 2008 Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Oct. 3. Five of the Eagles’ top seven finishers broke the 25 minute barrier. Florida State University won the meet with 81 points. EMU was the top Mid-American Conference team in the race, besting the Miami (Ohio), who finished 13th. Additionally, the Eagles were the fourth-best Great Lakes Regional team, with Butler (fifth overall) leading the way, followed by host Notre Dame (sixth), Michigan (ninth) and EMU.
 
Karanja’s time of 23:51 was the fastest of his career, breaking his previous mark of 23:56 by five seconds. His 10th place finish was eight spots better from his 18th place finish one year ago.
The second EMU finisher across the finish line was senior David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic), setting a personal-record of 24:39, a 13 second improvement over his previous time. His 58th place finish was also an improvement of 38 spots from last year’s invite.
 
Senior Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) was the third EMU runner across the finish line, running his second-best collegiate time of 24:48 for the 8K, good for 71st. Junior Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) also ran his second-fastest collegiate time, running 24:49 and placing right behind Naughton . The final EMU scorer across the finish line was senior Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage), running 24:53 on his way to place 79th.
 
The final two Eagles running ht the Blue Division race were senior Luke Chrusciel (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) and redshirt freshman Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe). Chrusciel ran 25:22 to finish 125th, while Sanseverino ran 25:46, good for 154th.
 
The Eagles will return to action Friday, Oct. 10, for the Michigan Intercollegiate to race the state of Michigan’s finest.
